With the changing of the season to Spring, the City will be making several changes to downtown. These changes will include: a face lift for one of our main intersections, Main and Battson, by taking out the multiple turn lanes and making that intersection a true 4 way stop. This will be done with paint, including bright MSU colored crosswalks as well as additional parking for Main and Battson. This will also enhance the Rowan County Art Center’s square with a few additional parking spaces and wider sidewalks for a more pedestrian-friendly experience, especially for their regular events on the lawns such as First Friday and the outdoor theater.
In addition, we have partnered with Rajant Corporation to install a downtown WiFi network that will be accessible to shoppers, visitors and residents in the immediate Main Street vicinity. Our plan is for this to be up and running by the end of May.
Speaking of the end of the month, our annual Memorial Day Veteran’s Parade will take place on Monday, May 30, at 10 a.m. There will also be other related events that morning.
And, coming back for its 2nd year will be the Morehead Freedom Fest on Friday, July 1. This will be feature the 3rd Annual Governor’s Scholar 4th of July Parade as well as the July edition of First Friday on the lawn at the Arts Center, three live bands on the Moonlight Stage, vendors and fun activities on First Street, the Al Baldwin Memorial 5K and culminating with our Thunder Over Triplett fireworks display.
There are more events planned for this spring, summer and fall so keep checking back with our site as well as moreheadtourism.com and moreheadchamber.com. In the meantime, get out and enjoy all that Morehead and Rowan County have to offer!
