Class Title: Mechanic
Department: Public Works
Supervisor: Director of Public Works and/or Assistant to Director of Public Works
Supervises: Assistant Mechanic
Class Characteristics: Under general direction, performs skilled tasks in repairing and/or performing preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment; performs related work as required.
GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential: Performs general repair work on all motorized equipment, including automobiles, trucks, tractors, mowers, and specialized maintenance/construction equipment. Performs road tests to determine defects and to check repair work before vehicle and/or equipment in placed back into service. Performs major and minor repairs, rebuilding, and routine preventative mainte4nance on vehicles and equipment. Installs specialized equipment in public safety and other emergency vehicles. May perform minor body work. Makes welding repairs on equipment. Repairs hydraulic equipment. Maintains adequate inventory of spare parts. Keeps accurate records on all vehicles and equipment to ensure servicing at proper intervals and to determine maintenance costs for each piece of equipment. Ensures that garage in maintained in clean, orderly fashion. Supervises departmental employees assigned to garage, including directing and approving minor repairs and/or servicing of vehicles and equipment, obtaining needed parts, etc.
Additional Responsibilities: Performs other duties as required or requested.
Training and Experience: Graduation from high school or equivalent supplemented by three years directly related work experience.
Knowledge: Knowledge of the standard practices and equipment used in the automotive mechanic trade, Knowledge of and experience in the principles of operation of gasoline and diesel engines, and of mechanical repair methods applicable to heavy trucks and construction equipment. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
Abilities: Ability to supervise the work of others. Ability to diagnose and repair, or supervise the repair of, city owned vehicles and equipment, Ability to prepare and maintain files on repair work for each vehicle and/or piece of equipment, inventory of spare parts, and activity report. Ability to understand and carry put oral and written instructions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with other city employees. Mechanical aptitude, manual dexterity, and good physical condition.
