Class Title: Laborer I

Department: Public Works

Supervisor: Director of Public Works and/or Assistant to Director of Public Works

Supervises: None

Class Characteristics: Under immediate supervision, performs a variety of sanitation, construction, and/or maintenance duties within the Public Works Department; performs related work as required.

General Duties and Responsibilities:
Essential: Picks up garbage and/or trash from homes and businesses and loads in collection vehicle. Assists in installing, constructing, repairing and/or cleaning city buildings, streets and roads, sidewalks, storm sewers, culverts, drainage ditches, street signs, barricades, guard rails, etc. Paints curbs and parking lines. Mows grass; cuts weeds, trees and tree limbs. Assists in salting/sanding streets and roads; removes snow. Assists in pouring concrete and making forms. May assist Mechanic as required in performing minor maintenance and/or servicing of vehicles and equipment, maintaining inventory of spare parts, etc.

Additional Responsibilities: Performs other duties as required or assigned.

Non-essential: May drive and/or operate departmental vehicles and equipment if in possession of commercial driver’s license; however, commercial driver’s license not required for the position.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Training and Experience: Graduation from high school or equivalent.

Special Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge: Knowledge of work hazards and applicable safety precautions associated withpublic works equipment and procedures. Knowledge of traffic control and traffic safety.

Abilities: Ability to perform heavy labor for extended periods of time, often under adverse weather conditions. Ability to deal courteously and tactfully with the public. Ability to establish and maintain working relationship with other city employees. Possess mechanical aptitude, manual dexterity, and good physical condition.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Instructions: Somewhat general; many aspects of work covered specifically, but must use own judgment most of the time.

Processes: Must occasionally consider different courses of action, or deviate from standard operating procedures, to get the job done.

Tools, Equipment and Vehicles Used: Construction and maintenance equipment (weed eater, shovel, chain saw, drill, rake, jack hammer, ax, press, concrete forms, concrete saw, tractor, bush hog, lawn mower, pick-up truck); may drive other vehicles and equipment if possess commercial drivers license.

Physical Requirements of the Job: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors; most work requires exertion of extreme physical effort for extended periods of time, and is completed outdoors regardless of weather conditions. Must lift heavy objects (more than 25 pounds); must use departmental equipment as a job requirement; exposed to machinery and its moving parts; exposed to high places, confined spaces; must use ladders and stairs; exposed to fumes, chemicals and toxic substances.

Contacts: Public and internal contacts are requirements of the job.

Confidential Information: Little or no use of confidential information.

Mental Effort: Moderate.

Interruptions: Few.

Special Licensing Requirements: Possession of valid commercial driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Kentucky is preferred, but not required.

Availability: Must be able to respond to calls at all hours.

Certification Requirements: None.

Drug and Alcohol Testing Requirement: Must participate in drug and alcohol testing program as a condition of continued employment.
