Kentucky Wildfire Hazard Season

Burning Restrictions
October 1- December 15 , February 15- April 30

It is illegal to burn between the hours of 6 a.m. – 6 p.m. in or within 150 feet of any woodland or brushland.

Burn Bans
May be instituted at any time, regardless of active wildfire hazard season.

Burn bands prohibit most or all outdoor burning, and are put in place to address immediate wildfire danger.

Fire Prevention Safety Tips

Heating Safety

  • Keep anything away from a heat source at least 3 feet.
  • Never use your oven to heat your home.
  • Have heating equipment cleaned and check every year.
  • Test smoke alarms every month.
  • Install smoke and CO alarms throughout home.

Cooking Safety

  • Do not leave food cooking unattended.
  • If you are sleepy or have consumed alcohol do not use the stove.
  • Keep oven mitts, utensils, food packaging and towels away from stove.
  • Grease/Cooking fire place lid over cookware and turn off burner.

Candle Safety

  • Never leave a candle unattended.
  • Keep candles at least 12 inches from other items.
  • Remember to trim the wick down each time.
  • Keep hair and clothing out of the way when lighting a candle.
  • Roughly 1/3 of home candle fires start in the bedroom.

Winter Storm Fire Safety

  • Stay aware of winter weather
  • Generators are to be used outdoors only.
  • Nearly half of all space heater fires involve electric space heaters
  • Turn heater off when leaving a room
  • Plan two ways out of home in case of emergency
